Bariatric surgery helps many of our patients lose a significant amount of weight, but that is just one of the many benefits of weight loss surgery. Patients also enjoy increased clothing options, more energy, improved or even resolved diabetes, lower cholesterol, lower heart disease risks, reduced pain from arthritis, resolved sleep apnea, and more benefits of a healthier lifestyle after bariatric surgery. In addition to all of this, recent research is also highlighting yet another benefit of bariatric surgery: an increase in life expectancy.

Live Longer After Bariatric Surgery

In a recent study published in The Lancet, researchers gathered data on obese patients from a number of controlled trials, cohort studies, and scientific literature. They found that obese patients after undergoing bariatric surgery (including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and duodenal switch surgery), lived an average of 6.1 years longer than obese patients who did not undergo weight loss surgery. The bariatric surgery patients also reflected a 49.2% reduction in all-cause mortality. The survival gains were even greater for obese patients with diabetes, who increased their life expectancy by an average of 9.3 years after weight loss surgery.

The researchers concluded, “Among adults with obesity, metabolic–bariatric surgery is associated with substantially lower all-cause mortality rates and longer life expectancy than usual obesity management. Survival benefits are much more pronounced for people with pre-existing diabetes than those without.”
