Expert Preoperative Guidance and Diagnostics
Bariatric surgery is the most effective method for losing excess weight when dieting and exercise haven’t worked. Though these procedures have been practiced safely in medical facilities for decades, it’s important to realize there are potential short and long-term risks involved with surgery.
Short-term risks include leaks, stricture, blood clots (eg., DVT, PE), bleeding, infection, adverse effects of anesthesia and breathing problems. Long-term effects can include bowel obstructions, hernias, low blood sugar, ulcers, stomach perforation, gallstones, and on rare occasions, even death.
Our Bariatric Care Process
Our bariatric care process begins with an initial examination and evaluation of your overall health. Our medical professionals will get a thorough understanding of your medical history and make you aware of any complications that may arise during the treatment. Comprehensive measurements of your BMI, (body mass index), metabolic rate, blood pressure, and other factors will be included in the general diagnosis to determine if bariatric surgery is right for you. We’ll also discuss and help you develop dietary changes that will ensure you have the best possible results after the surgery.
Effective Bariatric Procedures
The type of bariatric surgery you undergo varies depending on your weight loss goals and your doctor’s recommendation. Typically, once you’ve met the preoperative plan outlined by the doctor, we’ll schedule your surgery on a day convenient to you.
On the day of the surgery, you’ll undergo one of the following gastric bypass procedures:
The gastric bypass creates a stomach pouch that holds approximately 2-4 ounces of food. This small stomach pouch is then attached directly to the small intestine. Digested food will bypass the rest of your stomach, part of the small intestine and duodenum to significantly reduce caloric absorption.
Similar to the bypass, this procedure bypasses a large portion of your digestive tract. Your surgeon will remove roughly 80% of your stomach and reroute your small intestine. This procedure reduces the amount you can eat and limits the number of calories you absorb.
This is one of the newest, but most popular, procedures in bariatric medicine. Two-thirds of your stomach is removed to create a smaller, “sleeve-like” stomach. The smaller, tubular stomach restricts the amount you can eat and has an added hormonal effect that reduces your hunger drive.
